With the non-material support of the City Oberhausen and the local industry Fraunhofer UMSICHT was founded as a non-profit technical-scientific institution in June 1990. The premises of the institute comprise five buildings with offices, EDP center, library and a representative event location. The technical infrastructure encompasses workshops and pilot plant stations (3 100 m²) as well as laboratories (1 400 m²).
Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Oberhausen is located in the vicinity of the shopping and leisure center CentrO. Fraunhofer UMSICHT engages in the structural change of the city and the region with new ideas, technology transfer, spin-offs and the set-up of R&D-networks.
In 2011 the staff comprised 345 members, most of them with a degree in natural science or engineering. 198 are permanent staff; in addition there were 15 apprentices, 35 undergraduate students (diploma, master, bachelor), 86 student/research assistants and 11 interns. In 2011 the institute generated a turnover of 24.8 million EUR. Of these 6.8 million EUR are basic institutional funding, 6.7 million EUR are public revenues, 9.8 million EUR are revenues from industry, and 1.5 million EUR are from other cooperations.
As of 1 July 2012 Fraunhofer UMSICHT-ATZ, located at Sulzbach-Rosenberg within the metropolitan region Nuremberg, is a branch of Fraunhofer UMSICHT. This branch employs 45 staff. The annual turnover (as of 30 June 2012) was EUR 4.5 million.
