Optimization of energy supply systems

Technical and economic evaluation of energy supply concepts

Volatile power generators, decentralized energy systems, sector coupling, new energy markets, and players – the demands placed on our energy supply systems are increasing and so are the number of possible supply solutions. Today's common energy supply concepts and business models must, therefore, be rethought and realigned.

Solutions and services of Fraunhofer UMSICHT

With the help of simulation and optimization models, Fraunhofer UMSICHT supports you in technically and economically evaluating the right energy supply concepts for your situation, making your energy systems more flexible and developing new business models. Target groups include energy suppliers/public utility companies, contractors, operators of energy plants and housing associations.

Unique selling points

Fraunhofer UMSICHT combines many years of experience in the development of energy supply concepts and in energy plant construction with the development and application of simulation and optimization models. This enables us to accompany our customers from concept development through construction and commissioning to the scientific monitoring of plant operation.

How you can work with us

We work with you to design sustainable energy concepts and carry out technical and economic optimizations with the help of our models. It is possible to collaborate with us within the framework of a joint, publicly funded research project as well as in the form of a direct commission. We will be happy to advise you on which form of cooperation is suitable for your specific problem.

Reference projects

QUENTIN

Energy-efficient district development

QUENTIN is creating energy-efficient and affordable living space in the urban quarter Tackenberg of Oberhausen by planning, implementing and investigating four local heating islands with flexible CHP systems and refurbishment concepts.

PlaWaTT

Platform for heat transformation tools and measures

The "PlaWaTT" project aims to provide tools and measures for greenhouse gas-neutral heat transformation via an application-oriented platform and thus promote the heat transition in heating network and municipal heat planning.

HESKH

Hybrid Energy Storage Hospital

The project "Hybrid Energy Storage Hospital" (HESKH) deals with the question of whether and how the supply systems of hospitals can be used for electrical energy balancing. In addition to determining the potential itself, the project also examines the importance of precise heat load forecasts for the planning of flexible system operation.

RedoxHerne

Redox flow batteries for private homes

Fraunhofer UMSICHT is researching the development of innovative energy concepts and the system integration of redox flow batteries using photovoltaic systems in private homes at its model site for renewable energy supply in Herne.

FlexKWK

Concept for combined heat and power
generation

A new concept for combined heat and power generation reacts to fluctuating market prices and compensates for bottlenecks in the local grid. The combination of CHP with heat storage and power-to-heat is a building block in the energy transition.

Stadt als Speicher

Virtual storage of
electricity

Fraunhofer UMSICHT has investigated how virtual energy storage systems can be practically implemented in urban regions. The results show which systems should preferably be integrated and how the technical connection and control can be realized.
