Development of bio-based plastic compounds

Your challenge: Sustainability becomes a competitive factor

The plastics industry faces a fundamental transformation:

  • Regulatory pressure: EU requirements regarding recycled content quotas and the use of bioplastics are becoming increasingly stringent
  • Customer demands: Your customers are increasingly demanding sustainable, low-carbon materials with at least the same or improved quality and performance
  • Technical complexity: Bio-based raw materials behave differently than petrochemical ones—compounding requires specialized expertise
  • Cost-effectiveness: Products must remain cost-effective and competitive—despite often higher raw material costs

But how can plastic products be made more sustainable? Are bio-based or biodegradable plastics solutions to your challenges? And how can the value chain become more circular?

We provide answers to these questions. With us, you’ll find a team that masters bio-based plastics technology and supports you throughout your development process – from concept to market readiness. We help you stand out from the competition with sustainable solutions and achieve long-term success.

Our solution: Customized development of bio-based plastic compounds

We develop high-performance bio-based compounds for you—from formulation to industrial implementation:

Performance range Our expertise
Material selection & Formulation development

Systematic evaluation and selection of raw materials for your application: e.g., bio-based polymers (e.g., PLA, PHA, bio-PE, bio-PA), (bio-based) additives, fillers, and fiber reinforcement.

Cost-effectiveness, raw material availability, processing properties, and recycling potential are also taken into account.

Compounding & Processing

Formulation development or optimization of existing formulations, taking into account processability and required product properties e.g. through physical or chemical functionalization and modification of polymers, blending, additive incorporation, reactive modification and fiber reinforcement

Scale-up & Process optimization Transfer of compounding (i.e., production of plastic pellets) from the laboratory to the pilot scale using industrial equipment (throughputs up to 350 kg/h)
Characterization Comprehensive materials analysis in accordance with industry-standard norms or regulations, including mechanical properties, rheology, heat resistance, aging, flame-retardant properties and biodegradability.
Certification

Support with life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprint calculation, or biodegradability assessment (DIN CERTCO)

Application testing

Functional testing of compounds for various processing methods, including injection molding, blow molding, flat film production, and additive manufacturing.

Recyclability testing (mechanical and chemical recycling)

Whether you’re just starting with a product idea or facing challenges with existing processes – we step in exactly where you need us. From the initial idea generation to the optimization of existing formulations, we provide tailored support to address your specific needs.

Our expertise ranges from formulation development with small batches on a laboratory scale to sample production for processing tests on your equipment. You’ll benefit from accompanying material characterization and testing – all from a single source.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT offers you a team with many years of expertise and access to well-equipped laboratories and technical facilities:

  • Extrusion technology: twin-screw extruders in various sizes for compound development
  • Processing technology: injection molding, flat and blown film production, additive manufacturing
  • Analytics: comprehensive in-house material characterization and testing
  • Scale-up: industrial twin-screw extruder with throughput rates of up to 350 kg/h for seamless transfer to your production line

With this end-to-end infrastructure, we efficiently develop your bio-based compounds from the first laboratory trial to a production-ready solution.

Joint project

Several partners along a value chain work together on a solution – usually within the framework of public funding. We can build on a large network from industry, research, society and the Fraunhofer Institutes. We are experienced both in the selection of funding programs and in project applications, contribute innovative ideas to the process and then shape the transfer to the market together with you and other partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

As with every new collaboration, things are unclear at the beginning: How does a collaboration with Fraunhofer actually work and can Fraunhofer help me at all? Will Fraunhofer charge my company for its research and development work and who actually owns the results of the collaboration? The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has already compiled some general answers to Frequently Asked Questions. However, our projects are as individual as your technological challenges. Therefore, if you have any questions, please contact us!

How you work with us

The classic way of working with us: You commission us directly with a research and development service. We look at your problem together and work out a specific and needs-oriented plan for your plastics-related challenge. We combine scientific research and evaluation methods with practical test series and accompanying testing technology. In this way, we enable sound and efficient material development for your problem. It makes no difference to us whether you are a distributor of plastic products, a manufacturer of compounds or a retail chain that wants to have the packaging of your own brands tested.

A look at our projects

MoNova

Making plastic packaging recyclable

Mono-material films are needed to make plastic packaging recyclable. With them, important product properties of the packaging are retained, which also enable demanding industries to use materials sparingly.

PHAt

Natural thickeners for degradable lubricants

With the development of natural thickeners and binders, it should be possible in future to use new bio-based and biodegradable raw materials in lubricants that protect particularly environmentally sensitive areas from conventional non-degradable lubricants.

Bioshoreline

Biodegradable geotextiles for bank protection

As part of the joint research project "Bioshoreline", new types of biodegradable geotextiles made from renewable raw materials are being developed for use in future-oriented, environmentally friendly bank protection on waterways.
