Life Cycle Assessment

Your challenge: Scientific basis for sustainable action

Sustainability, resource efficiency and climate protection have become strategic goals in today's corporate policy. For long-term success, companies must take responsibility for the environment and society and document and communicate their commitment transparently. We provide you with the basis for strategic decisions for sustainability-driven action. This allows you to secure investments, reduce risks (e.g., in purchasing), optimize your processes, set yourself apart from competitors and comply with guidelines such as the GHG Protocol, CSRD, and EU taxonomy.

Our solution: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

  • Preparation of life cycle assessments (LCA) and critical reviews in accordance with ISO 14040/44 for products and services
  • Calculation of carbon footprints in accordance with ISO 14067
  • Preparation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14025 and DIN EN 15804.
  • Evaluation of plastic emissions in life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • Implementation and automation of life cycle assessments in companies using online tools, automated evaluation of product portfolios, or training courses.
  •  Support in the development of recyclable and environmentally friendly products (including circular design, e.g., with the CRL®-Tool)
  • Social life cycle assessment to evaluate social impacts in the value chain
  • Life cycle costing (cost analysis in the value chain)

Life cycle assessment for chemicals, plastics, and recycling technology

The focus is on the chemical, plastics, packaging, bioeconomy, carbon capture and utilization (CCU), recycling technology, and waste and circular economy sectors.

Unlike other providers, our interdisciplinary team draws on the expertise of the technical departments at Fraunhofer UMSICHT – for example, in the fields of bioplastics, (bio-based) chemicals, biofuels, carbon capture and utilization (CCU), recycling technology, and biochar. Our team of experts has over 15 years of experience in the ecological assessment of products and services. In addition, we can supplement our analyses for you with process simulation and experimental investigations.

How you can work with us

Do you have a product, service, or process that you would like to evaluate, benchmark, or optimize in terms of its environmental impact for yourself or your customers? We would be happy to provide you with a customized offer! We also offer our services as part of publicly funded projects. Just get in touch with us! Daniel Maga and Markus Hiebel are available to answer any questions you may have.

Current life cycle assessments and sustainability evaluations

LCA of flame retardants

Fraunhofer UMSICHT has now investigated for the first time the environmental impact of organophosphorus flame retardants compared to brominated flame retardants in plastic components such as charging plugs for electric cars or USB-C connectors in a comparative life cycle assessment commissioned by Clariant.

Medical Remanufacturing

Fraunhofer UMSICHT investigated the positive environmental impact of medical remanufacturing using certified processes rather than disposing of these products.

Assessment tool for recyclable packaging

Fraunhofer UMSICHT tested a software tool for the recyclability of packages developed by Henkel.

Reuse of toner cartridges

By taking back 1.4 million toner cartridges, Interseroh reduced greenhouse gas emissions by around 6,300 metric tons.

A look at our projects

FutureProteins

Protein extraction from plants and its LCA

In the FutureProteins project, several Fraunhofer institutes are pursuing the goal of developing pioneering technologies for protein supply from plants, algae, insects and fungi as an alternative to animal-based foods.

KIOptiPack

Plastics packaging with recycled content

In the KIOptipack innovation lab AI applications for the sustainable design and processing of plastic packaging are being investigated.

Backsheets

End-of-life pathways for photovoltaic backsheets

Using life cycle assessment, scientists at UMSICHT have compared the environmental impacts stemming from the End-of-life (EOL) treatment of fluorine-free and fluorinated backsheet material used in photovoltaic modules.

ThermoBiK

Climate protection through bio-based
adhesives

The development of new bio-based adhesive and adhesives based on polyurethane dispersions (PUD) was the focus of the project ‘Thermoactivated bioadhesives’.

PlastikBudget

Accounting of plastics in the environment

The project aims are an estimation of a plastics budget and a development of a method of assessing the impact of plastics for an eco-assessment.

PerfluorAd®-Process

Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Cornelsen Umwelttechnologie GmbH developed a resource and energy efficient process to remove PFAS from fire fighting water.

Customer testimonials from the projects

Sebastiaan Krol

CEO Interzero Circular Solutions

“The 'resources SAVED by recycling' study by Fraunhofer UMSICHT has demonstrated for more than 15 years the extent to which Interzero contributes to climate and resource protection by recycling valuable materials. We greatly appreciate the close and trusting cooperation. Thanks to Fraunhofer UMSICHT, we have scientific proof of the positive environmental effects of our work - and can use the facts to credibly communicate the ecological benefits of the circular economy to industrial companies and consumers.”

Adelheid Hauschopp-Francke

Managing Director RCS

"Our collaboration with Fraunhofer UMSICHT was a complete success. The LCA analysis provided us with valuable insights into our savings in greenhouse gas emissions, fossil resources and energy. We were particularly impressed by the smooth and uncomplicated process – from the initial coordination to the final calculation. At the same time, the team's high level of expertise convinced us.

Based on this positive experience, we would like to expand our cooperation and also implement CSRD reporting in the future to create a comprehensive environmental audit.

We look forward to continuing our partnership!"
