Life Cycle Assessment

Fundamentals of strategic decisions for sustainable

Sustainability and climate protection have become strategic goals of today's corporate policy. To achieve long-term success, companies must shoulder responsibility towards the environment and society and must document and communicate their commitment transparently.

Performing a Life Cycle Assessment

We perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Critical Reviews in accordance with ISO 14040/44 for products and services. With the results we supply the basis for strategic decisions for sustainable action. Our team of experts has many years of experience in the ecological evaluation of products and services. The focus is on the chemical, plastics and green IT industries, as well as on waste and recycling management.

Life cycle assessment for plastics, packaging, building materials, metals

In contrast to other providers, our interdisciplinary team draws on the expertise of the technical departments at Fraunhofer UMSICHT, for instance in the fields of bioplastics, (bio-based)chemicals, biofuels, Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), recycling technologies and biochar. Moreover, we can complement our studies with process simulation and experimental investigations.

Environmental impact of products and services

Do you have a product, a service or a process  that you would like to evaluate, benchmark or optimize with regard to its environmental impact? We will be happy to make you a tailor-made offer! We also provide our services within the framework of publicly funded projects. Do not hesitate to contact us! Daniel Maga and Markus Hiebel will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

More about our projects

More environmentally friendly flame retardants

Fraunhofer UMSICHT has now investigated the environmental impact of organophosphorus flame retardants compared to brominated flame retardants in plastic components such as charging plugs for electric cars or USB-C connectors for the first time in a comparative life cycle assessment commissioned by Clariant.

KIOptiPack

Plastics packaging with recycled content

In the KIOptipack innovation lab AI applications for the sustainable design and processing of plastic packaging are being investigated.

Backsheets

End-of-life pathways for photovoltaic backsheets

Using life cycle assessment, scientists at UMSICHT have compared the environmental impacts stemming from the End-of-life (EOL) treatment of fluorine-free and fluorinated backsheet material used in photovoltaic modules.

Sustainability

Assessment tool for
recyclable packaging

How can the recyclability of plastic be determined in the most efficient and reliable way possible? Fraunhofer UMSICHT tested a software tool developed by Henkel.

PlastikBudget

Accounting of plastics in the environment

The project aims are an estimation of a plastics budget and a development of a method of assessing the impact of plastics for an eco-assessment.

Sustainability
assessment of recycling activities

The efficient recycling of recyclable materials can make significant positive contributions by tackling resource use and consequently addressing climate change. This is confirmed by the study ‘resources SAVED by recycling’.

Processing of toner
cartridges

A new study conducted by the Fraunhofer UMSICHT on behalf of the environmental service provider Interseroh shows the specific contribution the professional reprocessing and reuse of used toner cartridges makes towards climate protection and resource savings.

ThermoBiK

Climate protection through bio-based
adhesives

The development of new bio-based adhesive and adhesives based on polyurethane dispersions (PUD) was the focus of the project ‘Thermoactivated bioadhesives’.

Medical Remanufacturing

Fraunhofer UMSICHT investigated how resources can be conserved by remanufacturing medical devices - especially cardiac catheters

PerfluorAd®-Process

Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Cornelsen Umwelttechnologie GmbH developed a resource and energy efficient process to remove PFAS from fire fighting water.
