Foundation 1990

Thanks to the scientific competence and tenacity of Prof. Dr. Paul-Michael Weinspach, UMSICHT was founded under his leadership in June 1990 and developed into a successful Fraunhofer Institute in January 1998.

We celebrate 30 years of Fraunhofer UMSICHT

Started in 1990 with five employees, the UMSICHT team now comprises 530 people. For three decades we have been developing technical innovations that contribute to a resource-saving society and economy. On our 30th birthday, we are ready for a new vision: We are pioneers for a sustainable world.

Our mission

Today, Fraunhofer UMSICHT is a pioneer for sustainable energy and raw materials management by supplying and transferring scientific results into companies, society and politics. The dedicated UMSICHT team researches and develops, together with partners, sustainable products, processes and services, which inspire.

30 Years Fraunhofer UMSICHT

We started in 1990 with the aim of promoting sustainable business, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative behavior. For a better quality of life for people and a higher innovative capacity of the economy. The results from three decades show: We have lived and implemented sustainability – whether with resource-saving processes, environmentally friendly materials or unusual methods.

The past 30 years also show that the world is developing rapidly. Megatrends such as digitization, the energy transition, and the circular economy present us with new challenges. We gladly accept them and remain true to ourselves.

On our 30th birthday, we are ready for a new vision:

We are pioneers for a sustainable world.

Milestones

1990-2020

From a think tank to a pioneer in a sustainable world.

A lot can happen in 30 years. A look at the history of Fraunhofer UMSICHT shows this. One example: At the time of its founding, five permanent employees worked for the institute; currently, more than 500 people work in Oberhausen, Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Willich. We look at some of the milestones in our history.

Prof. Dr. Paul-Michael Weinspach

Founder and institute director from 06/1990 to 09/2000

Whatever good a person gives into the world is not lost. [Albert Schweitzer]

Paul-Michael Weinspach was full professor of thermal process engineering at the University of Dortmund and headed the Institute for Environmental and Safety Engineering (UMSICHT) in Oberhausen from 1990 until his retirement in 2000.  The institute was incorporated into the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 1998 as the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT).

Paul-Michael Weinspach was a successful and visionary scientist and research manager who, with patience and perseverance, pursued his idea in the 1980s of establishing a non-university institute for chemistry and safety technology together with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. It is thanks to his scientific competence and persistence that UMSICHT was founded under his leadership in June 1990 and developed into a successful Fraunhofer Institute.

Paul-Michael Weinspach was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon and the Badge of Honor of the City of Oberhausen.
