Bio-based plastics

Bio-based plastics are an important component of sustainable business. Their use conserves fossil resources and avoids greenhouse gas emissions. Products made from bio-based plastics represent the sustainability commitment of innovative companies by securing and improving their future market opportunities.

Solutions and services of Fraunhofer UMSICHT

We develop tailor-made bio-based plastics for a variety of applications using films, fibers, injection molded parts, and others. In this way, we cover the entire development chain from polymerization and plastics processing to comprehensive material characterization.

Unique selling points

Our bio-based plastics can be processed on conventional machines. This is important to us. We use our many years of expertise to optimally adapt bio-based materials to suit the respective application. We attach great importance to low overall costs, good availability of raw materials, and simple processing. We would be pleased to provide you with bio-based plastics in sample quantities on an industrial scale.

How you can work with us

Interdisciplinary teams develop application-oriented bio-based plastics in close cooperation with our customers – from the initial idea to small batches. Innovative ideas are scientifically implemented in research projects. A wide variety of methods for characterizing plastics round off our portfolio.

Reference projects

InKa

Intermediates from
industrial spent coffee grouds

The "InKa" project develops and evaluates recycling options for spent coffee grounds from the catering and commercial sectors within a timeframe of three years.

MoNova

Making plastic packaging recyclable

Mono-material films are needed to make plastic packaging recyclable. With them, important product properties of the packaging are retained, which also enable demanding industries to use materials sparingly.

TechPLAstic

New applications for bio-based plastics

PLA compound with competitive material properties for technical products: Project consortium involving industry and research is developing a sustainable alternative to crude oil-based plastics for injection molded E&E components.

BioPSA

Bio-based pressure-sensitive adhesives

The demand for adhesive products based on renewable raw materials is growing. Within the framework of "BioPSA", the basic formulations of bio-based hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives are being further developed and adapted to suit different areas of application.

Bioshoreline

Biodegradable geotextiles for bank protection

As part of the collaborative research project "Bioshoreline", novel biodegradable geotextiles are being developed from renewable raw materials for use in future-oriented, environmentally friendly bank protection on waterways.

PHAt

Natural thickeners for degradable lubricants

With the development of natural thickeners and binders, it should be possible in future to use new bio-based and biodegradable raw materials in lubricants that protect particularly environmentally sensitive areas from conventional non-degradable lubricants.

AddiTex

Plastics for textile
applications

In order to be able to produce textile composites by means of 3D printing technologies, new plastic compounds are being developed that meet the material requirements of production and application.
