The path to implementing carbon capture and utilization (CCU)
Carbon2Chem® is in its final phase: The project partners are preparing the concepts and technologies developed for capturing CO₂ for its industrial application in steel production and its transfer to other sectors. Now is a good time to review the results achieved so far. The 8th Conference on Sustainable Chemical Conversion in Industry held November 19 in Düsseldorf offers an opportunity to do just that.
The program includes presentations by experts from the fields of business, science and politics, who will share their views on carbon management and carbon capture and utilization (CCU). What is the political framework for implementing carbon management in the European Union? What obstacles and opportunities do companies face when implementing CCU? What other projects besides Carbon2Chem® are working on designing a climate-neutral industry?
Background: The Carbon2Chem® joint project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, is developing technical building blocks to enable the implementation of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Since 2016, a consortium of scientists and industry experts has been working on developing and implementing suitable methods for using CO₂ from industrial process gases as an alternative to fossil carbon in the chemical industry. A range of concepts have been tested by researchers. First, these tests were carried out in a laboratory setting. Then, they moved on to a demonstration scale. Since 2018, tests have been conducted using real gases. From 2020 onwards, the focus has been on scaling up the processes that have been developed.
