Hagen heating plan: Feasibility study

Scientific study and assessment of selected heat sources for district heating in Hagen

Focus on Hagen: Potential for the heat transition

The scientific analysis identifies areas with suitable conditions for a piped heat supply and examines potential renewable heat sources.

Thinking about heat sources and networks together

For selected areas, various energy supply options – ranging from heat pumps and solar thermal systems to the use of waste heat – were examined and evaluated.

Project goals

The aim of the preliminary study is to provide scientific support for the city of Hagen’s municipal heat planning. The focus is on an in-depth analysis and assessment of selected sources of renewable heat and waste heat for supplying district heating networks.

Project benefits

The Heat Planning Act requires municipalities to develop a municipal heat plan, which includes the following components:

  1. Analysis of the current situation regarding the existing heat supply
  2. Analysis of the potential of available renewable energy sources and waste heat
  3. Target scenario for a climate-neutral heat supply
  4. Implementation strategy in the form of a concrete action plan

The city of Hagen is developing the municipal heat plan in-house and received scientific support from Fraunhofer UMSICHT. To enable a heat supply with future viability and low environmental impact, a targeted investigation of technological options for expanding existing and establishing new heat networks is required, among other things. To this end, the UMSICHT researchers first conducted a screening of potential heat network areas. Building on this, selected generation potentials for the identified areas were examined and evaluated in greater detail. Technologies considered included near-surface geothermal energy, river and wastewater heat pumps, biomass, solar thermal energy, and unavoidable waste heat from industry and commerce.

Project results

The results of the preliminary study were presented to the city in the form of a presentation and supplementary GIS maps and will be incorporated into Hagen’s municipal heating plan. They include an assessment of selected technological options for identified network areas and provide an overview of the next steps for implementation.
