Paving the way to the doctorate: UMSICHT Research School

Fraunhofer UMSICHT offers space for development and active support for doctoral candidates.

You are interested in writing a thesis at our institute?

We would like to support you at the best on your way to the aimed title. In the course of our Research School we help you to graduate successfully with a doctoral degree within three or four years.

The UMSICHT Research School consists of several elements:

Supervision

The supervising professors as well as the supervisors/mentors at the institute agree, in the context of a supervision/mentoring agreement, to regular meetings with the doctoral candidates regarding the progress of the work and adherence to the time and work schedule.

Qualification

Through doctorate coaching and special continuing education offers tailored to the needs of the doctoral candidates, their competencies are developed further commensurate with requirements. These offers constitute a qualified foundation for the time after the dissertation – at or outside of Fraunhofer UMSICHT. Furthermore, the doctoral candidates are offered colloquia and regular information meetings.

Networking

With an internal website specifically created for the doctoral candidates, Fraunhofer UMSICHT
promotes the exchange among them. The networking with the other scientists and employees of the institute as well as with other Fraunhofer Institutes and a variety of external research institutions is furthermore supporting a broad integration of the doctoral candidates into the national and international science community.

Doctorate in 3 to 4 years

  • The UMSICHT Research School supports and advises you so that you can complete your doctorate within 3-4 years.
  • You will complete your doctorate in the allotted time and still be involved in exciting projects in the department.
  • A supervision agreement clarifies the distribution of tasks between you and your supervisor.
  • The coordinator of the UMSICHT Research School accompanies the entire process through regular confidential status meetings.
  • In collaboration with the coordinator, you will develop an individual training plan with needs-based support and qualification measures.
  • A professional external coach also offers targeted support once a month with the dissertation writing project and the creation and optimization of scientific texts.
  • You will work with around 50 other doctoral students on application-related research questions.
  • Joint visits to industrial partners offer you the opportunity to get to know potential employers at an early stage.
